Summary:
On the evening of January 15, 1933, Mariette Beco (age 11) thought she saw something out her window. She moved her oil lamp elsewhere to be sure it wasn’t a reflection. Mariette saw a beautiful and luminous lady with a Rosary in her hands. Our Blessed Mother was wearing a white gown with a blue sash and was barefoot in the snow. Mariette’s account of her vision was discounted as a fraudulent imitation of the recent apparition in Beauraing just a few miles away. Mariette’s study in catechism class dramatically improved, however, and a priest encouraged her to pray to Our Lady. Our Blessed Mother appeared to Mariette seven more times. During two apparitions Mariette was taken to a spring, of which Our Blessed Mother said, “it is reserved for Her [Mary]” and “This spring is reserved for all the nations, to bring comfort to the sick.” Mary encouraged prayer many times and said she came to alleviate sufferings. She also asked for a small chapel to be built.
Interesting facts:
- During the apparitions, Mary was described as wearing a white gown and an “unforgettable blue” sash. She wore a transparent veil covering her head and shoulders. Her right foot was visible and had been crowned with a rose between her toes. The Rosary on her right arm was made of a golden chain and cross with diamond-like beads.
-Mary called herself the Virgin of the Poor and promised to intercede for the poor, sick, and suffering.
-Over fifty miraculous cures are attributed to the spring Our Blessed Mother identified.
-Many people were converted to the Faith during and after the apparition.
