  • Cruceiro
The top section of our cruceiro sculpture, on display in the Narthex Artist's draft rendering of the completed sculpture, which will be about 18 feet tall Fr. McDaniel with parishioner J.R. De la O, who coordinated the cruceiro project on behalf of the parish and donor. Parishioner J.R. De la O and the sculptor, Julio Martinez Martinez, in front of one of the Spanish cruceiros Clay model of the crucified Christ; this was used to make a more durable fiberglass model, which served as a reference for the sculptor while he carved the stone version The carving of the cross in progress (that's the fiberglass model on the table). Jesus, His Cross, and Our Lady were all carved from this single block of stone. The stone used for the project is a prized granite called silvestre vilachan. It's found in the area of Spain where the original cruceiros have been made for centuries. Statue of St. James the Apostle, traditionally depicted dressed as a pilgrim Base and column (with St. James) of the cruceiro; the cross design on the base is one of the symbols associated with St. James. On the other side of the base is the image of a shell, another symbol associated with St. James and the pilgrimage to Compostela. Our cruceiro pieces in progress in the workshop of Julio Martinez Martinez in O Rosal, Spain Our Lady is on the other side of the cruceiro cross Cruceiro cross packed for shipment to the United States The cross being unloaded from the truck to be brought into the church. This section alone weighs about 500 pounds! Setting up the column capital, which serves as the base for the cruceiro cross in the Narthex J.R. makes sure everything is level This sculpture is made to be seen at a distance of several feet; it appears rough up close, but this will permit the details to appear to us when the cross is up high on a column.
